We are pleased to announce the release of HUB - Journal of Research in Art, Design and Society, Issue #5 Duration? Dur(action)!. Guided by the collective of guest editors PÁR-A-GEM, this edition offers in-depth explorations of the intersections between media, temporality, and embodied artistic research.

This issue gathers five research expositions that examine duration through artistic processes, material transformations, and experiential time.
One contribution proposes revisiting as a method for long-term artistic research, developed through iterative returns to multi-year performance works and later expanded through environmental art practices. Another investigates phantom experiences—phenomena rooted in absence, memory gaps, and the human urge to fill temporal voids—developing artistic strategies to approach nothingness and non-time.
A third article expands the notion of time-based art by focusing on materials whose intrinsic transformations create an “imminent temporality,” revealing how oxidation, weather, and decay shape alternative temporalities beyond linear duration.
Also included is an examination of John Cage’s 4’33” in the digital landscape, where online performances transform silence into a negotiation between embodied presence and algorithmic time. Closing the issue, a practice-based study on long-duration musical performance investigates how physical states and environmental conditions affect the performer’s subjective experience of time, influencing improvisation and temporal awareness.

Readers are invited to explore these diverse perspectives on duration and artistic temporalities, which together illuminate the entanglements between perception, materiality, and contemporary media ecologies.
