The experiment is a walking performance through the center of Groningen exicuted with art students of arts school Minerva oktober 2022.
The task of the performers is to move like one body. And to investigate the public space as if they experience it for the first time. They investigate space using whole bodie(s) and all the senses.
Bruno latour says we can't be center stage anymore we have to be more humble and share our place with everything including the non-human. But how do you do that? How can we pay more attention to what we always take for granted?
I wanted to connect the different buildings in the area bij movement . Each building has to do with Judaism and the terrible Jewish tragedy of the second world war. On this square the Jews were gathered to be put on the train to the camps. This was a kind of remembrance ritual.
I had been to 4 squares and choose one square the dam . I made 2 drawings of the existing social choreography, how, the streams of people move at two different times during the day.
This is a super fun and simple idea to investigate a movement between audience players and passersby! I'm going on here!
This idea is too complex, I wanted to connect the past with the present of this place through movement. Video with blue screen we are still editing. But it does not fit into this research.
How can instant composition create a relationship between performer, audience, and casual passer-by.
How does this instant composition method works for investigating freedom of movement in the public space.
The result of this experiment is a better understanding of what space means through doing and the photo collage.
The result of this experiment is this working method, to investigate people flows I will use this form of observation.
This experiment was about language the verbal experiment how do you make contact with the non-living? also tells a lot ... especially about his own emotional motivations. Very much fun doing it!
Research method
Prepare the body and the rules of the instant composition in the studio
Video the performance. Ask a student to film the reactions of the by passers. Interview by passers without they know it (I will film their feet.) Film the after talk of the performers just after they performed.
Make a edit of the performance.
Ask the performers to look at the video 4 times with 4 times diverent questions.
Write/draw reflection notes myself ,make a collage of all the material.
Write what was most important ( as a event score ).
Nice idea but Forsyth's improvisation method is very complex. What do I want to get out of it? take one improvisatin idea from him and go back and play with the rhythms yourself.
Artist Laurence Aëgerter directs the lines outside. She connects things with eachother, you did not think they where cnnected at first site.....
My literature source was, a conversation with Bonjana Cvejic chesspearetidsskift. Retrieved June 25, 2022.
This is an associative experiment into forms and learning from artists don't know where this is going.
ps PEX is my name ;).
So, What happend?
The experiment yielded a lot of different information. To continue on this, it is interesting to use the commands one by one instead of 9 at the same time. Watching the video with the assignment to do that 4x from the 4-body theory. worked very well. This time it was mainly about the experience (both performing and viewing the video) and next time the reflection may receive more attention. It also turned out that more space and attention could be given to the performance for exploring the possibilities for interaction with the audience/passers-by. The cooperation and playfulness are powerful elements that enhance the experience of freedom of movement. And not considering the role of the bypassers created tension among the performers. and needs more attetion next time.
