FRACTURED MIRRORS

recording

INTRODUCTION

Fractured Mirrors stands as another significant addition to my forthcoming piano collection, building upon the gesture introduced in Whispers while exploring a distinct character and structure. Comprising three main sections—ABC, each subsequently developed and repeated, leading to a concluding section labelled D—the piece delves into the thematic exploration of addition and subtraction of musical material.

THE WORK

The work is structured as: ABC A1BC1 A2BC2 A3BC3 D. The work unfolds in an unmetered manner until section D, echoing the contemplative act of introspection akin to gazing into a mirror. Much like the shifting perspectives one encounters when reflecting upon oneself, the performer is afforded considerable interpretive freedom to imbue the piece with nuanced expression and emotion. As observed, B does not change - this decision is to further evoke the idea of a mirror, where A is a person, B is the mirror itself, and C is the reflection.

At the core of Fractured Mirrors lies a recurring gesture, a motif that serves as a foundational element throughout section A, its iterations gradually evolving with each repetition. Section B intensifies the musical tension, paving the way for the emergence of section C, characterized by an open melodic line and a departure from sustained pedal usage. This deliberate choice in C yields a quasi-soloistic orchestral effect, wherein a single note emerges prominently amidst fading resonance, a testament to my fascination with timbre and orchestration.

TThe concluding section, D, marks a departure from established material, introducing a more melodic and expressive approach. Here, I quote my previous works in my collection, Whispers and Real candle girl, by framing their main melodic material within a different context, underscoring the thematic unity and interconnectedness of the collection as a whole. Dedicated to Daisy Rentong Zhao, a close friend, Fractured Mirrors final section serves as a poignant reminder of the support and fresh perspectives that others can offer, echoing the multifaceted nature of self-reflection. On a personal level, by quoting my other works, which were dedicated to myself and another close friend, it functions as a reminder to Daisy that we will always be there to give a different view on what is being reflected on the mirror

CHALLENGES

Crafting Fractured Mirrors presented its own set of challenges, particularly in balancing freedom with direction. While providing a loose framework for tempo and expression, I entrusted much of the interpretive nuances to the performer, allowing for an organic exploration of the piece's introspective themes. Daisy's exceptional execution in the recorded performance showcased her aptitude for conveying the piece's intricate character, a testament to her prowess as a pianist. Despite recording the work myself as well, her interpretation evokes the exact character I was after.

REFLECTION

Looking ahead, I remain committed to expanding my piano collection, leveraging collaborations with pianists to bring these works to life. As my works continue to garner interest and performance opportunities, I am eager to further explore the depths of solo piano composition and performance, embracing the unique connection I share with my own creations. I will be performing many works of my upcoming collection as part of the CODA festival at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, in mid-June 2024, further demonstrating my commitment to exploring my own music from a performer’s perspective.
