ASCII Digital Design Museum (ADDM) is a fully digital, web-native museum founded in 2010 by artist and designer Rozita Sophia Fogelman. Operating primarily within public online platforms, the museum functions as a living digital archive for handmade pattern systems dedicated to digital art, architecture, textiles, and graphic design.

All works are created using 8-bit ASCII and 16-bit Unicode character systems—the foundational standards for text and graphic information exchange on the World Wide Web. Using simple text fields as a digital canvas, and geometric ASCII and Unicode symbols rather than the traditional alphabet, compositions are constructed character-by-character and streamed online in real time.

The project foregrounds rule-based visual systems, repetition, and structural logic, demonstrating how minimal symbolic code can generate complex visual, architectural, and textile formations without the use of artificial intelligence.

ASCII and Unicode Architectural Archetype

Using 8-bit and 16-bit ASCII and Unicode character systems within simple text fields, this pattern demonstrates how minimal symbolic code can generate architectural form.

This example shows how 8-bit and 16-bit ASCII and Unicode character systems, composed in simple text fields, produce structured digital patterns for architectural reference.

A pattern constructed from 8-bit and 16-bit ASCII and Unicode character systems, illustrating architectural logic emerging from simple text-based systems.

Inspired by Morse Code, ASCII Graphic Glitch Art — Volume One investigates ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) and Unicode as visual languages for digital art and design. Traditionally used to encode letters, numbers, and symbols across computer systems, these character sets are reimagined as tools for abstraction—transformed into patterns, structures, and typographic compositions that communicate beyond words.

This book explores experimental, abstract, and glitch-based visual systems using ASCII and extended Unicode characters.

Spanning over 372 pages, this volume presents original ASCII and Unicode graphics created between 2010 and 2013 during Rozita Sophia Fogelman’s M.A. studies in Multimedia Arts at California State University East Bay. Produced in real time using HTML on early social media platforms, these works evolved into a living digital archive: the ASCII Digital Design Museum, a pioneering online space for experimental text-based art.

More than a visual collection, this book functions as an exploration of how 8- and 16-bit code systems can be repurposed as ecotools for art and design. Through repetition and scale, Fogelman reexamines positive and negative space, glitch aesthetics, and digital pattern-making as a sustainable, post-material practice within contemporary design culture.

ASCII – Graphic Glitch Art – Volume Two is a 414 page collection of experimental black-and-white compositions created through ASCII and extended text-based character systems. Produced in real time on simple text platforms, these works transform the digital interface into a live, generative canvas—where repetition, scale, and fragmentation become visual language.

Building on the architectural and systemic patterns introduced in Volume One, this edition presents a focused exploration of abstract, non-representational text-based forms. Rather than traditional pictorial ASCII imagery, the works investigate density, rhythm, and structure through enlarged glyph fields and glitch-inspired typographic textures.

For Rozita Sophia Fogelman, ASCII became an immediate and versatile medium for creating visual systems through continuous online action, particularly within early social media environments. This volume represents the culmination of that exploration.

As an eco-artist and eco-activist, Fogelman demonstrates how text-based digital art can operate as a sustainable design practice—eliminating physical materials such as paper and ink while preserving immediacy, permanence, and accessibility. The result is a body of work situated at the intersection of digital abstraction, conceptual typography, and post-material design.

About ASCII and Unicode systems

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

*ASCII | ˈaskē |  abbreviated from American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for electronic communication. ASCII codes represent text in computers, telecommunications equipment, and other devices. Because of the technical limitations of computer systems at the time it was invented, ASCII has just 128 code points, of which only 95 are printable characters, which severely limited its scope. Many computer systems instead use Unicode, which has over 149,000 standardized characters, but the first 128 of these are the same as the ASCII set.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) prefers the name US-ASCII for this character encoding.

ASCII is one of the IEEE milestones.

**Unicode | ˈyo͞onəˌkōd | noun Computing an international encoding standard for use with different languages and scripts, by which each letter, digit, or symbol is assigned a unique numeric value that applies across different platforms and programs. Unicode, formally The Unicode Standardis an information technology standard for the consistent encoding, representation, and handling of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. The standard, which is maintained by the Unicode Consortium, defines the current version (15.0) as 149,186 characters covering 161 modern and historic scripts, as well as symbols, thousands of emoji (including in colors), and non-visual control and formatting codes.
