A Dutch saxophonist, composer and arranger, she is a current PhD student in Composition in Australia, belongs to an ensemble called The Stereography Project and joined the BMI jazz composers workshop in New York during her second master's degree.
Through the conversation with her I was able to understand that it is very important to ask myself many questions to be able to find a purpose and then go to the big research question. His advice on possible ideas or comments to improve were also, for example, the role of the saxophone in Colombian music and the practice of the instrument in different countries and cultures.
It was also very interesting to discuss that a final product could be in various ways, such as videos, texts with illustrations, guides, stories, etc.
The biggest question was whether my project idea would be focused on promoting Colombian rhythms or working on extended techniques independently.
Dick was also very excited and convinced of the idea to develop extended techniques in his own context, in this case related to Colombian rhythms.
Considers interesting
the possibility of combining
extended techniques with
Colombian rhythms, through the
analysis of pieces and also
comparing with other musical genres.
It is very important to generate a balance between the connection of two important topics (Colombian music and extended saxophone techniques) with the objective of being able to limit the research and at the same time create specific questions with clarity about the expected result.
