-What about fashion trend?

It's the same principle for fashion - you could call it the snowball effect.

It all starts with fashion shows. Brands come out with new products, revisit clothing, colours and materials and decide what is going to be in the spotlight this year. This was the case in 2024 for the skirt over trousers.

During fashion shows, brands choose their guests with one aim in mind: to communicate their brand and their products.  The guests are celebrities or influential people with a large community. These guests obviously wear the catwalk pieces sent by the brand to attend the fashion show, for example during Fashion Week in Paris.

-How do social networks influence us?

These platforms have been so successful that brands have seen an opportunity to take advantage of this visibility to make contemporary advertising and using the naivety of young people.

Social networks like Tiktok and Instagram are platforms where appearance is the most important thing, and image is the key. You just need to combine a personality with a large community with the product you want to sell and that's it.

Take Kylie Jenner, for example, who now has over 400 million followers on Instagram and is part of one of the world's most influential families on the networks.

All it takes is one post featuring a brand of clothing identifying her for her items to be sold, even at expensive prices.

Brands have found a way to sell anything and everything at any price, because it works! For example, even a brand of energy drinks got over 4 thousand likes.

Just when we think we're having fun and communicating with our friends and family, we're actually trapped in unimaginable marketing communications. We are bombarded with advertising information without realising it, which leads us to over-consume.

-How is it possible that nowadays everyone can follow and apply the latest trends?

Everything that happens at these shows ends up on the internet, and this is where social networks play a very important role. These influencers take to the stage and share their outfits with their followers, and thanks to the sharing of posts and videos, the trend begins.

Then what's considered trendy is picked up by fast-fashion brands like Zara, Shein and PullandBear, who create almost identical copies of luxury pieces and make it possible for everyone to buy these trendy clothes. Then everyone buys and reproduces these trends to feel as fashionable as the biggest stars.

-To conclued :

Fashion is a cyclical process that can take years to happen. It is influenced by many factors and driven by designers, the media and the public. Fashion cycles can encourage innovation and creativity and stimulate the economy. The skirt over trousers trend is a perfect example.

The latest trend from the 2000s to be revived is the skirt over trousers. It was only a matter of time before maximalism and layering became a fashion staple of the 2020s, and a divisive trend at that. Celebrities and catwalk shows alike have styled this Y2K essential.

And the autumn-winter 2022 catwalks were full of this 2000s trend. From New York to Paris, skirts and dresses over trousers were a major trend this season.

The viral Miu Miu mini-skirt worn with trousers by Macarena Achaga has made this trend even more viral and growing.

-The return of the Y2K style, fashion of the 2000s:

1. Fashion cycle: As mentioned above, fashion is cyclical, and trends often return after a few decades. The 2000s have become a source of inspiration for designers and consumers alike, particularly for those with a nostalgia for the era or who are looking for a retro aesthetic.

2. Pop culture influence: Popular culture plays a major role in the reintroduction of Y2K style. TV shows, films, music and even video games from the 2000s helped shape the aesthetic of the period, and many elements of this culture are now considered retro and trendy.

3. Social networks and influencers: Social networks play an important role in popularising Y2K style by allowing users to share images and videos of looks inspired by the 2000s. Influencers and celebrities are also helping to popularise these trends by wearing and promoting them on social platforms.

4. Reaction to minimalism: After years of minimalism and pared-back styles, many people are now looking for bolder, more eccentric looks. Y2K style, with its bright colours, eye-catching patterns and oversized accessories, offers an alternative to this minimalist aesthetic.

In short, the Y2K style's comeback can be explained by a mixture of nostalgia for that era, the influence of pop culture, promotion on social networks and reaction to previous fashion trends.

Unlike the casual nature of most Y2K trends, skirts over trousers can easily be made formal for a red carpet appearance. Whether it's an elegant look and like Rebecca Hall.

The tiktok trend:

One of the hottest looks of the moment is to combine trousers with tartan skirts of varying lengths for a punk style. Another variation is the addition of black trousers and a kilt for a rock look.

Trousers can be wider or narrower, depending on the degree of extravagance you want, and can be combined with all styles of skirt, long or short, printed or plain, or the simplest option is to wear them all together. The skirt is made from the same material as the trousers, a way of blending the two together. Alexa Demie, actress in Euphoria, dared to wear the leather version at the latest Balenciaga fashion show.

-Why is social networking driving us to buy fast fashion?

1. Influence of influencers and brands: Influencers on social networks and fast fashion brands often use effective marketing strategies to quickly promote new trends and collections at affordable prices, encouraging users to buy on impulse.

2. Social pressure: On social networks, there is often pressure to keep up with the latest trends and to look fashionable. Users may feel obliged to get hold of cheap clothes quickly to stay "in" and be socially accepted.

3. Ease of access and sharing: Social media platforms make it easy to discover and share cheap clothes. Users can be exposed to a multitude of fast fashion products through targeted advertising and personalised recommendations, encouraging them to make impulse purchases.

4. Rapid renewal cycle: The ephemeral nature of trends on social networks encourages people to buy fast fashion, as users often want to keep up with the latest trends without spending a fortune. Fast fashion collections are often renewed quickly to match ephemeral trends, which encourages frequent purchases.

Ultimately, social networks can play an important role in promoting fast fashion by facilitating access to products, creating social pressure to follow trends and encouraging impulse buying. However, it is essential for consumers to take a step back and think about their purchasing choices, taking into account the environmental and ethical impact of fast fashion.

-How do social networks influence us?

Trends on social networks have a major impact on fashion because they can spread quickly through shares, likes and comments. When something goes viral on social networks, such as a new colour, pattern or style of clothing, it can quickly influence users' clothing choices. Brands and influencers also keep a close eye on emerging trends on social networks, which encourages them to create collections and content that are adapted to stay relevant and attractive to their audience. In short, trends on social networks can act as a catalyst to shape contemporary fashion and consumer preferences.

-The fashion cycle:

The cyclical nature of fashion is a constant reality that runs through the ages. Trends often return in reinvented forms, inspired by the past but adapted to the current context. This cyclicality can be seen in patterns, silhouettes, colours and even lifestyles. This constant reinvention gives fashion a fascinating dynamic, where past and present meet to create unique expressions of style. It also underlines the importance of understanding and appreciating the history of fashion, as this can help us to anticipate future trends and better appreciate the cultural and social influences that shape our clothing choices. In short, the cyclicality of fashion is a fundamental characteristic of this constantly evolving industry, offering a wealth of inspiration and creative opportunities.
