This exposition provides access to the reflective documentation and collects the artistic audio files, videos, and notational traces of Birgitta Flick's doctoral artistic research project Refiguring Composition: Artistically Researching Composition, Improvisation, and the outside World, undertaken between 2021–2025 at the Artistic Research Center of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in the framework of the Doctor Artium Programme.
It is emphasized that the result of this research is comprised and represented by both the reflective documentation and all art works. The reflective text and the art works can of course exist and offer understanding and meaning independently of each other, even outside this research context. However, neither of them can stand for the total outcome of this research alone.
Practical notes
The audio files, videos, and notations are sorted by their respective chapter in the reflective documentation and appear in the order of discussion, thus not necessarily in the chronological order of their creation. Many traces have a collective copyright and I thank all copyright holders for the kind permission to share or duplicate a portion of what was created.
Some of the recordings were only made for documentary purposes and by simple means such as a phone. They are nevertheless shared here without any post-editing since they, despite the sometimes poor sound quality, contribute crucially to this research and an understanding of its path.
Both in regard to recording and notation, intermediary stages made for sharing with other participants of the research are kept in their original version to give as clear a picture of the situation as possible, thus potential typos, abrupt cuts or other such occurrences which would otherwise be corrected were preserved.
