Third working period (Vienna, 12.01.2023)

Extraneous reasons brought Christian to Vienna, which allowed for an afternoon of work with another member of the large ensemble-to-be, Thomas Grill. As Thomas works with electroacoustics, specifically with a self-designed Max patch, this was also a great opportunity to observe how elements from computer music would function in our soundscape.

Some words elicit more than others. They carry more weight, to be deposited within us. We collide with the words, and out of this encounter arises meaning. Form begets form. Some forms elicit more than others, forcing the words into meaning, giving them structure. What gives the form its structure?

The foundation provides a fundament from which to act. How far do we have to go to discover the foundation of improvisation? Is it humanity itself? What gives our foundation its identity? A foundation also gives us a fundament on which to build. With each new addition, the structure changes, takes on a new identity, but the foundation remains. We perceive it as something immutable. When it stands inside of our temporal scope, it seems eternal. But it does change, it erodes, sinks, shifts, and eventually it collapses from all the pressure, all of its historicity. In the end, we find ourselves inhabiting ruins.

What am I hiding from you? In my playing, in my thinking, there is a hiddenness going on. Through this project, I hoped to show this otherwise obfuscated element, to lay everything bare, not only to the audience but also to myself. I did not anticipate the number of steps it would take to get to the truth of the matter. The moment hides its secrets. But in the end, all is always here. It might just not be visible. Or we might not know how to look.
