  • At this this time, Make-up was only use by woman. When everybody was able to use it, Androgyny appear in this ear and was a major criteria of this community: New Romantic makeup is mixed with feminine and masculine influences like in the Theatrical Looks: Makeup was exaggerated and theatrical, to be seen by far and to express emotion : inspired by Renaissance Make-Up or Kabuki stage art.

Consequently : Some questions of gender conventions are brought to the table :

  • How I want to be seen ?

  • Who I want to become ?

Makeup allowed the New Romantics people, to stand out and assert their uniqueness in a society : judged too conformist.

The icon Leigh Bowery, although associated with other artistic movements as well, perfectly illustrated this philosophy with his avant-garde looks and extravagant makeup.
