SHARDS
Explorational practice with only fractals led to the composition of this piece Shards. In the session multiple ideas presented themselves but one specific motif caught my attention. The original motif is based on fractal where two notes make a powerchord on the E and A strings, with the third anchor point, a melody tone placed on the G string creating a string skip.
I took a short break from the session and on reflection over the motif the memory of listening to composer Steve Reich’s piece Electric Counterpoint feat. Pat Metheny came to mind. What if I take my motif and make it into a loop, then add layers of fractals upon it to create a textured musical piece? I experimented at first improvising diatonic fractal shapes, before settling on sounds I liked. I then displaced the rhythms I had been playing with.
Experimenting with more ideas some days later, I added another two layers to the piece. On reflection again I entertained the idea of performing this live using a loop pedal. Below the videos show practice of the piece using a Loop pedal, unfortunately the tool I had was a simple design and unable to control layers individually so I settled on recording the piece multitracking layers.
