BARE

Tenor Saxophone: Erik Brandell

Bass: Christine Lanusse

Mindlessly noodling on autopilot whilst simultaneously watching TV,  I stumbled upon an intriguing chord sequence which was based around Vitchev’s voicings, this also included a modification of a regenerated voicing. I wrote the sequence down in GuitarPro, put it in my folder of musical sketches to revisit at a later stage. This discovery became the base for the A section of Bare, surprisingly the melody organically emerged from within the chord progression. In bar 31 the chord is labelled with a question mark, as unfortunately I cannot trace the origin of this voicing, I can only speculate that as my harmonic knowledge has broadened in recent months that my intuition for finding voicings has also developed.

The main motif of this tune compises of LCR voicings (red), voicing modifications (green) and diatonic generation (yellow)

This is an excerpt of an exploratory practice session where the base of the solo section started to reveal itself.

This is an excerpt from a deliberate practice session. Here the aim was to execute the line of fractal  voicings (blue) employing hybrid picking.

Originally just a rhythmic pulse applied to a D# tone, the intro sounded very "bare". Here I decided to improvise fractals that give the impression of D# major and dominant colours.
