DELUGE
Tenor Saxophone Solo: Erik Brandell
Bass: Christine Lanusse
This composition was one of the first musical ideas produced within the project. The process developed over three stages which all employed both deliberate and exploratory practice methods:
1. Initial creation
2. Revisiting and refining
3. Further development
Initially starting with a short melodic motif different chord voicings to lead out of the motif. As the idea unfolded, I searched to find a chord progression that was melodic in of itself.
A common factor across the chord voicings studied are the use of extended and altered colours The first two major chord voicings (Gb6, Gbmaj13#11) share the same two notes a 2nd apart, creating instability and dissonance.
I experimented with blending in the Lydian #2 scale, adding another layer of tension and a distinct atmosphere.
The B section of the composition underwent significant changes. Initially, it unfolded very naturally, but it unfortunately the aesthetic was too similar to the A section. To create contrast and progress the tune in another direction, I refined the harmony and structure to achieve a more dynamic sequence.
This clip shows the evolution of the A section to Deluge. The motif is based around a melodic figure from the Lydian #2 scale and Vitchev's LCR expansion voicings are employed throughout. The first scene is an excerpt of an exploratory session, where the original musical idea was conceived, this progresses in scene 2 & 3 there the idea is established and variations are exlored. The last scene is an excerpt of deliberate practice where technical preparation is underway for the recording process.
The following recording is a combination of exploratory sessions where the aim was to find a B section to the tune. The use of LCR expansion voicings are highlighted in red, fractal shapes in blue and the integration of multiple harmonic devices in purple. The last scene shows the transition from a B section idea into the C section.
