VIS holds an open call for every issue. Up to seven expositions are selected by the Editorial Committee for entry into the collaborative peer-review process. Read more about submitting a proposal, the editorial process and find FAQ in the links above.
How to submit an exposition – Step-by-step
To apply for the open call: create, design and submit an exposition using the database Research Catalogue (RC).
1. Create an account in RC
Create a basic account in RC and request for an upgrade. The upgrade can take up to 1–2 working days.
RC instructions: Setting up a new account
Note. RC is free of charge, and you can register an account as an independent artist – or through a University/Organisation that is a portal partner in RC.
2. Choose editor type
Once you have an upgraded membership ("full account") in the Research Catalogue, there will be a "Create exposition" button on your profile page. When you click on the button, select "Editor type". Choose between graphical or block-editor.
RC instructions: Choosing and Editor
3. Fill in meta data
When you have clicked on "Create exposition" and selected an editing tool (Graphical Editor or Block Editor) in the Research Catalogue, you will be asked to fill in information about your exposition. You must provide:
- Title (the title of your exposition)
- Abstract (a summary explaining what your exposition is about: what, why, how). If you have chosen to write in a Nordic language, also include an English summary.
- Copyright (your first and last name)
- Language (the language of the exposition)
- Affiliation (the name of your university/college/organization, or alternatively, the city/country where you study or work) Keywords (a few keywords describing the research and the artistic field you belong to)
- External link (optional; here, you can, for example, add a link to your website/portfolio).
4. Design your exposition proposal
Once inside the editing tool, you create a draft of your exposition. The draft can consist of one or multiple pages. It should include the following:
- A summary explaining what your exposition is about and how it relates to the issue’s theme. Approximately 200 words.
- A longer text describing your artistic research project, which parts you want to include in the exposition, and what these parts should contain. Approximately 2000 words.
- Examples from your artistic practice.
- Examples of content (images, videos, audio files, text, etc.). If possible, visually demonstrate how you plan to develop your exposition.
- CV and contact information.
Your proposal may be more advanced than the above, and you are welcome to create a complete exposition. However, keep in mind that the editorial committee has limited time to review proposals, and they should not have to spend more than 20 minutes reading through your submission.
Your exposition should not have been published previously. If only certain parts of the exposition have been published, this is acceptable. Please describe in a note in the submission how and when partial previous publication has taken place.
The main language should be Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish. English and other Nordic languages are also welcome as VIS aims to encourage international presentation and visibility of Nordic artistic research. Multilingualism and parallel language use are a natural and welcome part of VIS. To ensure that the Editorial Committee (which reads Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English) can access all content, a translation should always be provided when using other Nordic languages.

5. Submit your exposition proposal
Submit your exposition for review, choose the portal: VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research.
RC instructions: Submit for Review
Great, now you’re finished!
Once your exposition has been submitted, no further action is needed on your part. You will be contacted after the submission deadline has passed and the editorial committee has held its evaluation meeting. Thank you for your contribution, and we look forward to reviewing your work.
Checklist / Recommendations
- Make sure you have provided enough content so that the Editorial Committee can evaluate your exposition draft. We recommend you to fill in asked metadata and follow each step below "Design your exposition" (step 3 and 4).
- Copyright issues: Ensure that you have addressed copyrights issues pertaining to any material that you add to your exposition.
- Use of license: Published expositions in VIS are using the Creative Commons licence CC BY-NC-ND.
- Use Chicago style for references. It is recommended that footnotes are allocated in the vicinity of the text, for instance in the margin or as pop-up-notes.
- Be sure that the links are working; external links should be opened in a new window and internal links in the same window.
- Please note that when pasting text across from text editors such as Microsoft Word, formatting issues may ensue. We recommend that you prepare text content as unformatted (plain) text, or copy across to RC using "copy and match style". Afterwards, you can add formatting such as bold, italics, etc.
- If using video/audio, upload original videos instead of embedded material.
The Editorial Committee of VIS considers the following when selecting expositions:
- How well the exposition proposal relates to the theme of the issue of VIS.
- The general quality and relevance of the artistic research.
- Whether the exposition takes place within artistic practices and contributes to further research.
- Whether the exposition contributes to insight, knowledge, and awareness of methods, ethics, and context in artistic processes.
- Whether the exposition proposal is conceived for the benefit both of those within the field and those beyond the sphere of artistic research.
- The level of linguistic awareness in both the research content and the design of the exposition, including how language choice supports accessibility, equality, and inclusion.

The Block Editor
The block editor, uses the same tools and the drag-and-drop interface of the graphical editor, but positioning is relative. As a result, block pages are fully “responsive”. Instead of an absolute grid and an infinite canvas, the block editor uses a more newspaper-like rows-columns structure. It is suitable for editing pages that have a lot of “inline” content, where media is inserted between or beside blocks of text, or media has to be positioned in relation to certain elements in a text. It is less flexible for creating diagrams, maps, or for overlaying materials. (Reference: Extended RC guide)
The Graphical Editor
The graphical editor, allows the author to set the position of each element in the page. This makes it easy to build rich graphical pages in which text and media, such as images, video and audio files, are freely positioned in an infinite canvas. However, due to their non-linear nature, graphical expositions are not “responsive”. If you want readers to be able to read your exposition on mobile devices, then the block editor might be more suitable for your project. (Reference: Extended RC guide)
VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research is a digital open access journal presenting artistic research, with a special emphasis on the Nordic region. It highlights the importance for Nordic artist-researchers of reflection as a mental discipline that, when interwoven with artistic practice, generates new knowledge. The journal is the result of a cooperation between Stockholm University of the Arts (SKH) and the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme (part of Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills).
