TiO2: The Materiality of White
The artistic research project TiO₂: The Materiality of White (MoW) is led by Associate Professor Marte Johnslien, Department of Art and Craft, Oslo National Academy of the Arts. The project builds on her PhD project White to Earth, completed at the same department in 2020.MoW is funded by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) through the Programme for Artistic Research for the period 2022–2026.
Since 2020, MoW has collaborated with the research project TiO₂: How Norway Made the World Whiter (NorWhite), led by art historian Ingrid Halland at the University of Bergen.
NorWhite is funded by the Norwegian Research Council for the period 2023–2028.
MoW seeks to make the materiality of white visible through ceramic works and archival investigations, analyses of the pigment’s history in Norway, and critical perspectives on its future.
MoW and NorWhite employ interdisciplinary methods and collaborate closely on both material research and dissemination. The results are shared both artistically and academically: through exhibitions, publications, and lectures in Norway and abroad.
