Conclusion

I have started this research with this quote of Fernand Vandenboegarde “Nomos Alpha is a very difficulty piece to performs, all the sonirities can't be technically realise by the performer."

During this research, we discovered the universe of Xenakis, with on one hand its aesthetics, its "philosophy" of music. Xenakis is a sound sculptor looking for a music of the instant. On the other hand, we discovered the composition techniques that he used to create his masses of sound. I'm talking about the different mathematical concepts like the "sieves" and group theory.
This is one of the main reasons why Nomos Alpha is so difficult and, in some passages utopian, as said Vandenboegarde. But after these research we know what is the main elements in Xenakis' music and in Nomos Alpha especialy. For example, we know that sounds and energy are the most important elements of this piece, and to highlight these elements, we could give the second place to a parameter such as the tempo.

This research has been a great artistic enrichment for me, and goes beyond the results of this exposition on Nomos Alpha. But the part of my research that was most exciting to me was the part about the interpretation. During the interview, Makis Solomos told me about Xenakis' music, but especially about Nomos Alpha : "The score is only 50% of the piece, the remaining 50% are the performers". Indeed, when I started my research last year, I could not imagine that there were so many ways to execute this piece because in this music especially, there are lot of information in the score.

Nomos alpha is a piece that can discourage many musicians, both by its particular language and by the great virtuosity it requires. However, I hope this research will allow cellists to approach and play Nomos Alpha.
