Audio-visual play by Lucien Goethals - text by Jan Van der Hoeven

Vensters (1967) written for  2 reciters, magnetophones, filmprojection, cello, piano, 3 or 4 percussionists

Duration: ca. 20’

This inter-medial oeuvre is a unique example of expanded cinema in Belgium dating from 1967, modelling a creative collaboration between composer Lucien Goethals (1931 - 2008) poet Jan Van der Hoeven (1929 - 2014) and the institute for psychoacoustics and electronic music (IPEM) where Goethals worked together with composer Karel Goeyvaerts (1923 - 1993) and musicologist and cellist Herman Sabbe (°1937).

The reconstruction of this work implemented restauring the original 16mm films and the precarious handwritten musical score.

For some of the Beta-movements four colour films were created according to the instructions in the score.

The original fourth film projection concept could not be realised due to its complexity and the absence of an analogue projection, meaning that the eventual instrumentation of this work as presented on October 24th 2019 at the ‘Articulate’ Research Festival in De Singel, Antwerp is
