2 The seeds: The origins of the project
This chapter explains the origins of the HumanTree creation through the metaphor of seeds, which are understood as the beginning of something. This chapter answers the first guiding question: What purpose, vision and resources inspired the HumanTree Project? Understanding the complexity of creative processes, as Sawyer (2006) mentions, ‘requires us to know much about the culture, society, and historical period’ (p. 20). For this reason in Section 2.1 I introduce the seeds from my homeland, meeting new cultures during my trip to Finland and Nepal, seeds from my grandfather, seeds from traditions and a song from my homeland, and seeds from the life of trees and their importance to the environment. In Section 2.2 I then explore the role of creativity as a needed fertiliser for this journey to start. Together these various seeds created a rich and fertile ground for this project to grow.
