In his book Dark Ecology – For a Logic of Future Coexistence Timothy Morton presents a complex and paradoxical dark ecology - an ecology without nature. While the relationship between peas and bees is real, the concept of nature, as a thing in itself, reveals itself as pure fiction and human imagination. His dark ecology does not suggest a return to nature, but rather a turn towards real relations, between human and more-than-human life forms, an ecology for the universe.
He points out that green or ecological awareness (which he calls Ecognosis), follows a looping structure, as in a Möbius strip – a curved path, that only seems to have one side. In the movie Blade Runner, the main character Deckard travels along such an oedipal path, slowly realizing that he himself is the enemy he is chasing; being the android, he is sent to eliminate. Human environmental awareness tends to exclude itself in the same way, traveling along this curved path, because ecological phenomena have a loop shape.
Ecology and recycling are symbolized with a Möbius strip.
