Other Ways

A lack of incentives and limited exchange prior to the internet can be understood as key factors contributing to the restrained development of radio art until recently in Brazil. One of the exceptions was the work of Rodrigo Manzano, who produced the radio documentary Som Paulo. Divided into three chapters, Som Paulo was Manzano’s final course evaluation work in journalism at the State University of Londrina and a project for his MA degree in Communication and Semiotics at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. The work was broadcasted by Rádio Jovem Pan AM, SP, Rádio MEC, and Rádio Educación in Mexico.

Another exception was the program rádiocaos (radio chaos). The main slogan of the program offers a hint: “Rádiocaos goes in one ear and does not go out the other, promising a listening experience that will not go unnoticed.” The program was created in 1998 by Samuel Ferrari and Rodrigo Barros Del Rei and had several collaborators, such as Movies and Theater director Felipe Hirsch. Rádiocaos was first aired on commercial stations in the Curitiba, Paraná. Currently, the program can be heard on several stations in Brazil and around the world, such as Rádio USP FM, Rádio Zero in Portugal, and radiokeer in Paris; it is also available on the internet. In two hours, rádiocaos presents songs, poetry, sound poetry, excerpts of literature, old commercial jingles, testimonials, vignettes, creations by collaborators, and works by the producers themselves. The selection of original content is accompanied by a valuable collection of pieces by hundreds of poets and intellectuals, recorded over the years.
