Looking for the Invisible:
ArtScience, fundamental research and the importance of reflection | Katarina Petrovic
From making a bodysuit for sexual pleasure in a church or translating Jupiter’s radio emissions into poetry, negating the Holy Bible or sonifying the void - Katarina’s work tends to provoke and question not only what we think we know, but what we imagine as well. Combining art, science and technology her practice explores the concept of creation as the problem of ultimate origin - the birth of cosmos or the emergence of something out of nothing. She is interested in the mysterious moment of appearance, the moment of invisible becoming visible, noise becoming a signal, random disturbance becoming meaningful information. In her work, Katarina creates systems and generative processes that intimately connect nature with language. She uses various media such as text, code, video and sound, and makes modular installations in online and offline space.
Artistic and scientific research both navigate the lands between what is known and what is imagined. On this border with the invisible we find various methods of inquiry that bring about new forms of knowledge, understanding and experience of the world and our position in it. In the keynote lecture for the Artistic Research Day Katarina will share her work in a performative lecture, reflecting on her ArtScience practice and development as well as open up the space for dialogue, exchange and imaginations of new frontiers for artistic research and practice with present students and researchers.
