CONCERTS
Playing concerts is an important part of this project both as artistic outcome as well as a method. They have served as milestones for the project and have been fantastic opportunities for the musicand me to meet and interact with audiences.
As I have had this dogma of performing everything live and not using any pre-recorded material (be it audio or control signals) I have had to adapt the material in various ways. Since different tunes may require different tunings, synth patches and synth programming (see teletype, er101) my solution has been to play some more abstract material, such as drones or soundscapes (that the synth can make on its own without me actively playing it) between tunes, in order for me to be able to make the necessary changes without making a pause in the music. This has made the forms of the concerts move back and forth on the continuum of stretching and interpreting.
The setlist and forms of the concerts has been slowly transforming as I bring in new songs and parts, and take away other ones. This has been done in an iterative process where I listen back to the recordings of the concerts and find what worked well and not so well and make changes accordingly. I see this process as a kind of natural selection in sounds and tunes. Furthermore the concerts change over time as I learn new songs that I wish to perform or because I just want to change things up for the sake of moving the project ahead and trying new material.
