Defining You, Finding You:
The works in Defining You, Finding You reinterpret official documents - a sibling’s A4 autism spectrum diagnosis and the Thematic Apperception Test Card, an illustrative card used for psychological assessment. These two official diagnostic documents are remediated in this work through the lens of conversation between the artist and her brother and the inclusion of the brother’s childhood drawings. This remediation questions the construction and conveyance of a diagnosis by asking: what if? What if a sister, rather than a medical practitioner, interpreted and presented a diagnosis? What if the the standard white A4 page became something tactile and sensorial?
Shrouded in darkness and viewed with a torch, it asks the question - What do we see? What do we choose to look at, for how long, and when do we look away? How do we see? Who is seeing?
