Composing GIFs is a portfolio of works exploring the application of music composition practice and technique to the creation of animated GIFs. Through a process of filming and editing, I composed video 'samples' into short rhythmic micro-compositions which are presented in this online gallery.
The creation of the works was largely intuitive giving me space to experiment with new ideas as and when they arose. Initially, I was interested in exploring the use of gestures similar to those found in the work of Jennifer Walshe and other New Discipline composers, however, as the project developed, I found other more varied methods of applying my composition practice to GIF making. All footage used in the project was filmed by myself.
As a composer, my work often deals with contrast between the order of the human/natural world and digitally generated chaos using musical procedures and isorhythms as a means of generating material. Over the course of the project I became aware of the similarities between video editing and electroacoustic composition. Many audio editing techniques, such as time stretching, have analogues within video editing. This allowed me to draw on my pre-existing audio editing knowledge to make the transition between disciplines more natural.
