At the end of this study, I have reached a series of conclusions that address the initial research problem, which I present below.
The knowledge I have gained through the study of the musical and cultural context of Dialogue de l'ombre double has allowed me to better understand Boulez’s creative identity and compositional style. This deeper understanding has helped me to grasp the aesthetic of the piece, which is highly distinctive within its time. My interpretative approach has evolved as a result, leading me to consider how Boulez’s stylistic choices shape the work’s musical language. I have also realised how my own interpretation has changed throughout this research process, as my increasing awareness of the work has influenced my performance decisions.
A significant challenge in interpreting Dialogue de l'ombre double lies in the complexity of its musical parameters and the necessity of understanding both its context and structural elements to develop a coherent interpretation. The formal and motivic analysis has revealed details I had not previously noticed, such as the interrelation between different motifs and the role of spatialisation in shaping the musical discourse. These insights have allowed me to enrich my performance by considering aspects like timbre, phrasing, and dynamic contrasts more consciously.
Additionally, the process of writing this study has encouraged deep reflection on my interpretative practice, not only in shaping a consistent approach but also in finding technical solutions to the challenges posed by Boulez’s score. I conclude that studying the work in detail and in relation to the composer’s context has stimulated my imagination as a performer, prompting questions that have led me to perceive the piece in a new light.
This study is inherently subjective. While its findings may serve as a resource for other performers, they do not aim to establish a definitive interpretative model. It is likely that in different moments of my career, I will continue to discover new aspects of the piece, which will be reflected in future performances.
