The Layering of clothes with reference in Pop Culture

Pop Culture has always been very deeply intertwined with the latest fashion trends. Before, every trend cycle used to resurface and come back in style every 20 years. Then, with the new media like Tv, more magazines etc. the trends used to resurface every 5-10 years and nowadays with the rise of social media the trends cycle much faster than before.

One of the most popular fashion eras until this day are the 90s and one of their fashion staples was layering clothes over each other, like long sleeved tops under short sleeved shirts. This trend could be seen in pop culture in tv series like “Friends” and “Clueless” but also in the music scene with people like Kurt Cobain or Snoop Dog representing and spreading the trend. The layering trend had a lot of varieties in aesthetic, going from a very preppy and girly style in “Clueless”, to grunge with flannels worn by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, to a hip hop style with oversized t-shirt or sport jerseys worn over oversized hoodies by Snoop Dog or the band D12 and even supermodels like Kate Moss joined that trend, who often wore layered vests and tank tops.

Contemporary fashion designers like Miu Miu or Balenciaga put a modern spin on the layering trend and brought it back to high fashion runway shows in many different ways, varying from very simple and minimalistic to over the top and extravagant

Nowadays, celebrities like Helena Bonham Carter still continues to wear a staple trend from the 90s with lots of different layers on the red carpet but also out in public.

Dressing modest and trends

You have a lot of quiet luxury, clean girl, minimalism trends now which also involves dressing more modest in a way. Online a discussion started about, when will people recognize hijab women for trying to show for a long time that there’s class and
elegance in covering up and it's not something negative.

Dressing in layers and trends like quiet luxury, minimalism is quite popular for the latest years. People that follow these trends get faster more appreciation and recognition from others for the way they dress than hijab women.

Still a lot of people see it as a form of repression. Wearing a hijab is also freedom and feminism.

In this research I go more in-depth about what the different views are on this problem.

What role do social networks play in influencing fashion ?

by Jade

-What about fashion trend?

It's the same principle for fashion - you could call it the snowball effect.

It all starts with fashion shows. Brands come out with new products, revisit clothing, colours and materials and decide what is going to be in the spotlight this year. This was the case in 2024 for the skirt over trousers.

During fashion shows, brands choose their guests with one aim in mind: to communicate their brand and their products.  The guests are celebrities or influential people with a large community. These guests obviously wear the catwalk pieces sent by the brand to attend the fashion show, for example during Fashion Week in Paris.

Everything that happens at these shows ends up on the internet, and this is where social networks play a very important role. These influencers take to the stage and share their outfits with their followers, and thanks to the sharing of posts and videos, the trend begins.

Then what's considered trendy is picked up by fast-fashion brands like Zara, Shein and PullandBear, who create almost identical copies of luxury pieces and make it possible for everyone to buy these trendy clothes. Then everyone buys and reproduces these trends to feel as fashionable as the biggest stars.

Origins of the trend in traditional cultures

The principle of layering appears in several traditional cultures. It is easy to imagine that there was a practical reason for this, since iti s mainly found in mountainous or northern areas: the Andes in South America, Uzbekistan in Central Asia, the Balkans in Eastern Europe. The aim is obviously to provide effective protection against the cold. But there seems to be another, more important reason: display. Indeed, it seems that layers of clothing are increasingly worn for major celebrations, especially weddings. By wearing many layers of clothing, the bride is demonstrating her wealth.

The Influence of The Magazines on Trends and How Visual Representation changed over time. By Lars

In the 50s and 60s Magazines were in a huge competition against the upcoming television. With the help of the modern technology of computers the production sank, and Print was super popular. But Magazines peaked during the 80s and 90s. The Editors had huge Influence on the Consumers as well on the designers. But with the internet the Print was slowly getting taken over by it. But with that the end consumer got more and more power. The democratisation of the Fashion industry began. The Magazines could not keep up the pace of social media and most of them closed or switched to digital content. Theres also a counter movement I personally would call thoughtful consumption. Print is having a comeback but its niche Magazines and mostly Visual based content likewise the magazines of 032c a nowadays well-known magazine. Fascinating finding was for me that with all these changes of power the trend cycles still follow the same Pattern every time has its own comeback. In addition, the visual representation of the trend in this case Layering is still similar it is still the popular most likely wealthy young adults. The only thing that changed in my point of view is that now males also wear clothing more related as women’s clothing. But the main thing is the people who dictate what cool is are still in the triggle down effect as soon as the mainstream is wearing the trends the “cool guys and girls” are going to move on to the next thing to be special then the others. The change of power hasn’t changed the fashion industry in that case.
