History
Besides some initiatives, Artistic Research became a stronger focus of mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2017, when two PEEK projects were approved by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), "Rotting Sounds" led by Thomas Grill and "Creative (Mis)Understandings" led by Johannes Kretz and Wei-Ya Lin. Similarly, the residential program BASE, led by Arno Böhler and Susanne Granzer, played an important role in developing artistic research at mdw. Subsequently, in 2018, mdw organized a symposium ("knowing in performing") and a lecture series with the same title in preparation for the development of mdw's Dr. Artium Program and the establishment of the Artistic Research Center (ARC). Later, among the first highlights was mdw's hosting of the SAR conference 2021 at mdw (together with the two other art universities in Vienna).
