The performance features four of us, Stella, Angelina, Demos and Konstantina, each with a different look, taking turns playing the guitar and presenting different interpretations of punk. The goal is to challenge the audience to think about how punk is defined—or whether it can even be defined at all.
Angelina Agathaggelou, Androniki Moutaftsi, Demosthenis Papazoglou, Konstantina Sofokleous and Styliani Zintili present a performance piece that combines sound, visuals, and conceptual art to explore the idea of punk. More specifically, a guitar with a light sensor attached to it. When someone plays the guitar, the light reflecting on the sensor changes, which triggers a series of visuals we created or documented and later we coded in Processing. These visuals include images of graffiti, grunge elements, and typography with phrases like “what is punk?” and “this is not punk,” inspired by René Magritte’s This is not a pipe. The concept also draws on Dadaism, using ambiguity to question the boundaries of punk identity. Moreover the guitar sound is connected to a speaker through an amp using Bela, and a potentiometer can define and adjust the level of distortion of the guitar sound.
