What Is the Coquette Aesthetic: Origins, Style Elements, and Controversies. (z.d.). https://www.whitevictoria.com/blog/what-is-the-coquette-aesthetic-origins-style-elements-and-controversies.html

For this assignment i chose the micro trend coquette. I used to wear bows in my hair or around my neck as accesoiries. This comes also from this trend. I feel like this trend also is about romantication of our lives. Like something looks boring i would put a bow around it. It’s also about feminine energy, contunuing to hyperfeminity. For example ballet flats are also very coquette. It made a big comeback in 2023. When i see this trend i think about softer colors such as pink, green or white. It’s also about the female gaze. And also about a more optimistic approach. What is very coquette are patterns such as florals and polka dots. Because of these patterns on the clothes makes it more romantic but also a bit old fashioned. If you look at this trend people tend to wear layered skirts, ruffled tops and cute shoes like mary janes.

Lets have a look back in history. The word coquette is french. It means a person who is flirtatious and charming. Coquette comes to light around the 17th century. In evolution of this girlie character, it’s about claiming what the term girliepop means. And not putting and negativity towards it. Because this aesthetic was also called: nymphette, which was based on the novel lolita. The 2010s version of coquette of young women is now super differently itnerpretated. In modern times it focusses more on delicate and beautiful fabrics. Also has a main focus on detail.

With coquetteness there is a way of reclaiming our femininity. When women are exposed to see how we are worthy as we are, that softness is not a weakness and to adore romanticism. Respect can still be earned by showing more feminine sides. I agree with this. I feel sometimes with being seen as a woman wearing more ‘girly’ clothes on, you can seem more submissive. But portraing it in a power movement seems more logical. Ariana Grande has a song called god is a woman. Which i feel like suits this really well. In the video she is using soft pastel colors. With hair its more about looser styles. Like braids with bows or two ponytails.

Characteristics from the trend are: pastel, pearls, hearts, glitter and bows. When it comes to hair it’s super unrestrained and just celebrating feminine aspects. It’s also a way of rebelling against constraint. I also feel like getting ready for a date and dressing up more in the sense of romance really fits this vibe. When it comes to make up it’s very glossy and light. Like putting a sunset/rise on your face. Also don’t forget the blus hand a lot of highlighter.

Vivienne westwoods collection: Vive la Cocotte, Is super coquette. Using femine use in colors and silohettes. But also prada fall/winter collection 2024 was all about bows around the body. Artists such as lana del rey or ariana Grande are giving the super feminine energy. They use it as a transformation tool; From romantic to power.
