Acknowledgements

This article originated with a chapter of my dissertation (University of Leiden, ACPA, 2024) in which I examined the markers for silence which are embodied in online performances of 4'33". In the current article, I pursue the investigation further, exploring the relationship of silence, gesture, and duration, and the affordances of Cage's artwork in expanding the possibilities of time within the YouTube environment.
