Composing the Politics of Musical Creation: The Composer as the Mediator of Collaborative Work Interactions
Doctoral dissertation by Helga Arias
Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität, Linz — Doctor Artium (Dr. art.), 2025
This Research Catalogue exposition accompanies the written dissertation Composing the Politics of Musical Creation: The Composer as the Mediator of Collaborative Work Interactions, submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctor Artium degree at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität, Linz.
The project investigates how compositional authorship, performer agency, and collaborative processes interact within contemporary music practices. It introduces and applies the Iterative Feedback Model for Collaborative Composition (IFMCC)—a framework designed to structure and analyse co-creative dynamics between composers, performers, and technologies. Through three case studies, the research explores how artistic collaboration functions as a site of knowledge production and how artistic research can generate new understandings of creative interaction.
The exposition complements the written dissertation by presenting audio, video, and web-based documentation of the artistic works and processes discussed in the thesis. Each chapter page mirrors the structure of the written document and includes selected media, reflective commentary, and contextual information.
Readers are encouraged to consult the full dissertation (PDF) in parallel with this exposition. Together, they provide a complete account of the artistic, theoretical, and methodological components of the research.
Navigation: Use the menu on the left to access each chapter. Chapters 1–4 provide contextual and theoretical foundations, while Chapters 5–7 document the three case studies (Signifié–Signifiant, I See You, and Lieder aus der Fremde), including video, audio, and web materials. The exposition concludes with a reflection on the research process and its implications for artistic collaboration.
