Research at the Theatre Faculty of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts unfolds through artistic projects, pedagogical experimentation, and theoretical reflection. Publishing activity documents these processes, offers analytical insight into their methods, and makes them accessible to international scholarly and artistic communities.
The publishing house of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts focuses on scholarly publications in the fields of music, theatre, scenography, drama education, cultural management, radio and television studies, and related disciplines. The publishing house manages the full editorial preparation of approximately twenty titles per year.
Inclusion through Theatre – A Journey of an Actor with Down’s Syndrome to Cognisant Artistic Creation and Social Acceptance
Is the actor’s difference (or disability) a challenge – or an advantage that can generate a distinct theatrical poetics? These questions are explored in a three-year artistic research project with adolescent actors with Down’s syndrome at the Aldente Theatre. The publication reflects on different approaches to this field, examines rehearsal and performance processes from the inside, and documents the positive inclusive impact on both Deaf actors and the wider public.
Politics and Community Engagement in Doctoral Theatre Research
This publication offers insight into the political dimension of doctoral research in theatre, presented at the 8th Conference of Doctoral Studies in Theatre Practice and Theory (Theatre Faculty of JAMU, 2017). The essays address topics such as domestic abuse against women in India, participatory theatre in Poland, Slovenian independence, the theatricality of terror, and immersive theatre.
Theatrum.online
A web-based multimedia textbook on theatre for learners aged 15+. Four independent chapters (Dialogue, Narrative, Mask, Theatricality) offer theoretical introductions, methodological suggestions, and examples of theatre practice. Materials include texts, audio and video excerpts, illustrations, and photographs. The resource can be used across subjects (e.g. language and literature, social sciences, cultural history, aesthetics) and supports collaboration, creativity, and communication.
Paths of Artistic Research. Conversations on Where Artistic Research is Heading
A collection of interviews with artists associated with Brno’s higher arts institutions. The publication explores how individual artists entered the field of artistic research, how they define it within their practice, and what functions it fulfils. It highlights the plurality of approaches rather than offering a single definition.
How to Prepare a Human Being
A collection of texts created at the Theatre Faculty of JAMU (Philosophy course, academic year 2021/22). The authors reflect on (in)equality, (power)lessness, and gendered behaviour in educational institutions, theatre environments, and artistic collectives, and discuss impacts, consequences, and possible interventions.
