TIME LINE

COLLECTIVE POEM

 I

II

DESCRIPTION

Here, you find the documentation of the creation process of the dance work We, Alive, a production of Holland Dance Festival 2026, choreographed by Laisvie Ochoa. Part of the Good [Old] Times project.

Below you find a timeline to follow. Under each day, you will find out about the process, and above, the video of the rehearsal.

A celebration of inner strength and collective pulse.

Description of the piece:

What is alive within you? This question lies at the heart of We, Alive, a deeply human dance work where individual and collective experiences merge in a poetic language of the body.

Each performer connects with the pleasure of movement to reveal their inner strength and passions. Through choreographies that weave together shared encounters and intimate solos, the piece honours both the unique presence of each dancer and the power of unity. Inspired by the chorus of ancient Greek theatre, We, Alive reimagines the collective as a living body—one that supports, expands, and contrasts the voices of its members, celebrating the vitality that emerges when we move together.

SOLO

GROUP

Being present

Everyone enters their position in the line. Everyone is facing forward, except for Herman and Myriam. Each person observes the audience warmly. Please take the time to be really present, to breathe, to feel yourself, the space and the others.

After 10 to 20 seconds, Myriam turns, looks at the audience, takes a deep breath, and goes to the piano.

Herman turns after that and begins his solo.

1

Herman

Connecting gently to oneself and the audience

Everyone stays in the line, looking at Herman. When Herman turns towards the line, hugging himself, everyone starts the Mudra Choreography. That is done 2 times (Right and Left).

Transition

When Herman extends his hand towards the audience, Julia goes to him. Everyone else turns towards their neighbour and holds hands to do a couple of gentle turns. The trio connects with this turning.

2

Trio: Mariza, Nicoline, Willemien

The power of being together

After a couple of turns with the partner, everyone moves around the space and creates 3 smaller groups in different positions of the stage.

  • Group A (Francesca, Theo, Claartjes, Anne, Anka, Herman, Julia): Inspired by the trio, they make synchronised, simple arm movements.

  • Group B (Gera, Ans, Paula): leaning towards each other in a very caring manner. Develop a gentle, soft and caring dance with hugs.

  • Group C (Marjolijn, Paulien): looking at each other, like flirting, they do small turns, stops, hugs, finding different positions together about friendship.

In the solo of Mariza, everyone finds a way to bounce, just before she does, and everyone moves around a little bit, finding a new organisation in the space:

Transition

  • Group A (Francesca, Theo, Claartjes): with the solo of Willemien, they start their choreography of the breaths and arms connected. When the trio finishes, Myriam joins.

  • Group B (Paulien, Marjolijn, Gera, Ans, Paula, Anne, Anka, Herman, Julia): starting with Pauline, they make a long line that travels across the space. Mariza, Nicoline and Willemien join this long line. They all go towards the back of the space and start playing with the lines in different ways, making the space and energy very dynamic and playful.

3

Quartet: Myriam, Francesca, Theo, Claartjes

Playfulness

Lines in the back.

Everyone makes lines of at least 3 people and crosses back and forth. Make it fun!!!!

Transition

At the end of the quartet, Myriam comes back to the piano, and the rest join the lines shortly. From the lines, the group of the Poem #1 meets on the right of the stage, and everyone else finds a partner and a place on the stage. Poem #1 starts immediately.

4

Poem #1

(Make it faster! With no stops between signs)

Trust the dancer inside

Everyone is in couples facing each other having a movement conversation. This conversation happens with very very slow movements, many pauses, and its inspired by the fist part of the poem:

Vliegend, vliegend in mijn beweging vind ik mijn centrum.

Vertrouw op de danser in jezelf.

In beweging kom ik in mezelf.

Ik bruis van energie en voel me zo welkom in mijn lichaam.

Ik kan mijn gedachten de vrije loop laten.

(Flying, flying, in my movement, I find my centre.

Trust the dancer inside.

In movement, I come to myself.

I am bursting with energy and feel so welcome in my body.

I can let my thoughts run free.)

Transition

When Herman and Ans go to the floor, the group joins the poem (Anka in the front) and all together do the last sign language part.

5

Solo: Anka

Support

The group creates a cloud around her and follows her everywhere. At the end, they come to hug her.

Transition

Just before the end of Anka, when the group is hugging Anka, Pauline and Marijoline escape the group and steal the attention.

6

Duet: Pauline and Marijoline

(make it shorter and clearer, we need a clear ending to mark the transition)

Excitement.

Everyone by themselves walks at different speeds around the space in circular pathways. Always looking at the duet and making space for them. When one person stops, everyone stops to create interesting spatial compositions, coming together in different configurations.

Walk, walk, walk, stop in a composition, walk, walk, walk, walk, stop in a composition, walk, etc.

Transition

The last composition in the space is the line (one behind the other) on the left side of the stage. Include Myriam in some way as part of this line. Pauline and Marijoline join at the front. The only ones that are not in the line are the group of Poem #2. They go to the centre front of the stage and start immediately.

7

Poem #2

(Make it faster! With no stops between signs)

Fun!

  1. In the line, everyone looks at the Poem and gives all their attention.

  2. Fall when Gera makes the sign.

  3. Open the arms when it's time

  4. When Gera goes out of line, everyone else follows. Go to your spot to do the last signs together.

Transition

After doing the signs together, Ans goes to the front of the group and takes all the attention.

8

Solo: Ans

Softness

With calm, and looking at Ans, everyone spreads evenly on the space and roots themselves in a position, like trees, creating a forest for Ans to go through. Everyone is gently shifting the weight like trees in the wind. Small movements with the head and arms are possible. The spine is very open and mobile.

Transition

All the group except Anne, Gera, and Paula embrace Ans. Anne immediately starts with her stoic walk. This all happens on the right side of the stage.

9

Trio: Anne, Gera, Paula

(Practice the pushing to Gera and no solo for Paula)

Going through

After hugging Ans, everyone shifts the focus towards Anne, who already started, and the whole group stays very close to the trio.

Let’s see what the group can do when Anne and Paula are pushing Gera.

Transition

The people of Poem #3 stand next to Myriam, so she joins them and starts the poem (maybe the group takes Myriam)

10

Poem #3

(Make it faster! With no stops between signs)

Connection to oneself

Lights!?

One option is to make the space very dark and keep only one spotlight for the poem at the front left, and the rest is very dark. The dancers bring the lights and move them very slowly behind. Pauline can go behind the curtain to protect her eyes. At the end of the poem, all the lights go towards Julia, and that's the transition to her solo.

11

Solo: Julia

Party!!!

She starts by herself, and then everyone joins the party

12

End

Option 1:

The music leads to the end with a blackout.

Option 2:

The dancers of Kieran also join the party, and we even invite the audience, and the music leads the end with a blackout.

DAY 9 – 10th January 2026

THEME: clarity
OBJECTIVE: clarify the situation and energy of each scene, experiment with changing the energy softly or abruptly
