Since when have Tao people stopped using for their own familiar ways to pass down the island’s history?

Since when have Tao people started to only learn about Lanyu from the writings of non-Tao people?

In the past when there was no television, male and female, old and young Tao people liked to gather around after dinner for chatting and singing. The most well-known style is perhaps the mikariyag (Hand-Clapping Singing Party) during the summer beautiful-moon season. Of course, single youngsters used this chance to find partners and to bond with peers through creating poems and songs. At the same time, they were also learning traditional songs which they had to master throughout life. This Hand-Clapping Singing Party is like the modern college, where people can build up relationships beside learning.

Hand-Clapping Songs are mostly about histories of the villages and the island. These are the stories, which school teachers never teach us. “Tao classroom” wish to rebuild a learning and exchange platform like formal mikariyag and invite elders, who like to share their knowledge. Here we are also able to exchange thoughts about current issues on Lanyu. Most importantly, we will focus on the stories that are not passed down by the ocean. We sincerely invite people who like to listen to stories, to ask questions, and to discuss, to join us!

The Tao Classroom: The Stories Dissapeared in the Ocean

Activity 3: Learning anood songs (the traditional narrative song style) announced by Si Pehbowen (Kuo Zheng)

With experiences from the past two traditional song workshops, we try to correct our mistakes and plan the content of our workshops into more details.

We hope with each workshop, we would be able to go deeper, and that the Tao culture basics can be learnt systematically. Let us personally experience singing in this workshop, imagine a world without written words, and how it would feel like to pass down wisdom by singing.

In this workshop, we invite Hsie Yong-Chuan to teach us a piece of anood style that he created himself. During the learning process, we can personally experience the difficulties of the traditional songs, understand what is right and what is wrong, learn the melody and lyrics by heart. It should be very different from songs we hear in the modern life.

Additionally, we hope to spend 30-minutes on a discussion session at the end. We wish to implement the discussion between different generations, in order to achieve the goal of this platform. The main focus will lie on the cultural loss of Lanyu.

We sincerely invite those who are interested and have the time to join and discuss with us.

Time: 2019 November 10, 7:30-9:30 pm

Location: Igang Hostel (hall or garden) in Iraraley
