Beyond the Saturation Point

Why does one continue beyond the saturation point? This bilingual exposition discusses repetition and difference while performing with trees, and uses as an example the video Year of the Pig with a Tatarian Maple performed in Nobelparken in Stockholm during 2019 as part of the project Performing with Plants at Stockholm University of the Arts. The exposition consists of a brief version of the video, documentation of the working process, and an essay with references. The aim is to show how repetition produces small (and big) differences and therefore makes a difference. And how it in this case led to a new project, Meetings with Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees.

Year of the Pig with a Tatarian Maple (mini) (9 min 10 sec) – uppfördes och spelades in i Nobelparken i Stockholm mellan 9 januari 2019 och 15 januari 2020, och innehåller allt som allt 108 sessioner med trädet. Den här versionen med 5 sekunders bilder är för att ses med mobilapparater. Grundversionen, Year of the Pig with a Tatarian Maple (1 t 48 min) med 1 minuts bilder av varje session är gjord för att visas som installation.

The above video is a result of doing something again and again – on many levels, which I will describe in the text that follows. Please watch the video before you read it.

Year of the Pig with a Tatarian Maple (mini) (9 min 10 sec) – was performed and recorded in Nobelparken in Stockholm between 9th January 2019 and 15th January 2020, and contains all in all 108 sessions with the tree. This version with 5 second clips, is for viewing on mobile devices. The basic version, Year of the Pig with a Tatarian Maple (1 h 48 min) with 1-minute clips of each session is made for installations.
