With experience from filmmaking, animation, designprojects and teaching, Bernsen is seeking to explore the space of opportunity for designers to integrate moving images into various media concepts, in a balance between physical and digital, real and virtual. His research investigates modes of storytelling and orchestrating the meeting between the audience and an experience, introducing designs through projection mapping, video installations, and VR-storytelling.

    SENSOUS SCREENS FOR THE MOVING IMAGE- Relationship and interplay in spatial installations This essay emerges from a research project concerned with how physical spaces can incorporate digital screen content towards human experiences and interaction. An analysis of a video installation called: Silence Interrupted serves as a startingpoint for a discussion on the merging of space and screen, in this case with a main focus on how the visual content of a video image is orginized in relation to the installation space and the audience present. The following discussions finds itself in between the field of motion graphics and installation art and are motivated from a growing curiousity towards a better understanding of the use of screen media in various spatial environments.

    The aim of this artistic research project is to create an illustrated VR documentary experience that narrates the story of a time witness from the second world war in Bodø, Norway. The project explores questions concerning visual storytelling and ethics in the encounter between the VR-audience, interviewed subjects and the audiovisual spatial design. Artistic and qualitative research methods have been employed to explore how different visual modes and contexts alter the experience of narrator and narrative in a media format characterized by its ability to place the viewer in a state of immersion, intimacy, and a sense of presence. Theoretically, this study is situated in an artistic landscape connected to media theory, journalism, ethics and visual communication. Concepts such as postmemory, media witness ethics, with the so-called risk of improper distance and considerations around the term distant others, are relevant for the reflection associated with the project.
