Born in Taiwan, grew up in Australia, Mao Lee started studying piano at the age of fourteen.
Despite the relatively late beginning in proper musical education, in as short as four years time he has became known by the local music scenes as winner of major piano competitions such as Brisbane eisteddfod , Redland bay eisteddfod, Queensland piano competition, Tyalgum Murwillumbah music festival and more.
He was accepted into the Queensland conservatory to study Classical piano with Russian pianists Natasha Vlassenko and Oleg Stepanov, as well as Harpsichord with Huguette Brassine.
Under the influence of diverse international study culture and excellent teaching staffs in the Queensland conservatory, he has became particularly interested to the concept of H.I.P.P. (historically informed performance practice) and eventually chose to pursue his musical quest further to Europe in the Royal conservatory of The Hague, study with renown fortepiano specialist Bart van Oort.
During his time in the Hague, besides performing concerts in venues such as Museum night in Delft, Radio west broad cast concert series in Nieuwe Kerk. He was also active in participating academic events such as the European Music Analysis Conference (2014, 2017) and AEC Early Music platform (2017).
In 2014, as one of the selected students from the early music department he went to England for 10 days to study the particularity of original keyboard instruments from fine collections include Finnch cock collection, Cobbe collection, and Linda Nicolson collection, this ten-day exploration had been made into documentary by Daniel Bruggen.
He is the funder and co-funder of few early music ensembles: Den Haag Galant Ensemble(2015-), Ensemble Für Kenner und Liebhaber (2017-) Eroica Ensemble (2017-). Recent activities include the first performance on period instrument in the Netherlands of the complete incidental music after ‘Egmont’ by Beethoven with Peter van Heyghen (Eroica Ensemble), ‘C. P. E. Bach Double’ Orchestral tour in the Netherlands (Ensemble Für Kenner und Liebhaber).
When not practicing music, he enjoys painting, ice skating, walking in natural and meditation.
