Kay Lawrence is a research doctoral candidate at the Queensland College of Art (QCA) Griffith University. Kay’s practice combines digital media with processes related to textiles, such as knitting, sewing, embroidery and binding of fabric. Kay researches the multi-sensorial qualities of fibre, including the haptic qualities innate to fibres and garments and the way these engage memory.
At present, Kay is creating sculptural works from organza and a line of knitwear for fallen branches. These projects speak through textile materials and techniques about Kay’s vested interest in contemporary social and environmental issues.
In 2009 Kay graduated with first class honours from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Receiving several academic awards and grants over the course of her study, Kay secured a postgraduate research scholarship in 2011 to complete her Doctorate.
Kay has also completed residencies with Crane Arts, Philadelphia, USA, Red Gate in Beijing, China, Geidai University, Tokyo, Japan and Queensland Environmental Protection Agency, Peel Island, Australia in addition to her current residency at Sandavinci School of Art and Design in Aimoto Japan.
