Markus Hanakam was born 1979 in Essen, Germany.

Since 2004 collaboration with Roswitha Schuller as duo ‘Hanakam & Schuller’, their work is shown at Museums and Festivals in an international context, including Recontres Internationales 2012 at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, ISEA 2011, Istanbul, 4th Moscow International Biennale for Contemporary Art 2011. The first comprehensive publication on the two Viennese artists Markus Hanakam & Roswitha Schuller was released autumn 2016, published by De Gruyter.
Hanakam & Schuller are tricksters. As artists and researchers, they remodel the rules of fine art, creating idiosyncratic orders and new world designs incorporated in videos and objects. The artefacts of the two artists from Vienna are "Gestalt-changers"; they change their outer shape and re-appear in a number of different contexts. They mainly work with video, interactive computer applications and drawing. They gained several awards like the MAK Schindler Fellowship in Los Angeles as well as an Artist in Residency at the Citè International des Art, Paris. Their short Film “INVASION” is awarded as Jury Selection Work at Japan Media Arts Festival 2012.
