Giaco Schiesser is a philosopher, theorist and publisher.  From 2013 to 2020 he was a member, from 42015 to 2020 vice-president of the Executive Board of SAR (Society for Artistic Research.)


Giaco Schiesser studied philosophy, cultural and literature studies at Free University Berlin. His work and his publications focus on the theories of cultures, media, and subjects/singularities | epistemology | aesthetics, art research | democracy, public spheres, every day culture. 

He is a professor 'em. for the theory of cultures and of media and for artistic research, and was the founder and head of the artistic PhD programme Fine Arts (2011-2022; PhD group for art research ) at  Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK.


Before, he was  head of the Department of Art & Media (2002-2017) as well as head of the section Research (2012-2018) at  ZHdK.


He also holds a permanent visiting professorship for Ph.D. at University of Arts and Design Linz, Austria. a PhD group for art research at ZHdK.

  • Opening Address: Florian Dombois' "Galleria del Vento" - A Research Project through, about and beyond Artstic Research (2017 - 2017)
    Polifonia project, Principal Investigator: Giaco Schiesser
    Florian Dombois' research project "Galleria del Vento" - started July 8, 2017 and will run till August 13, 2017. It is the contribution of Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) to this year's Research Pavilion in Sala del Camino, Venice. "Galleria del Vento" is a multi-layered research untdertaking that is a "Frontier Research": modest, radical and challenging also main stream understandings of Artistic Research. The Opening Address attempts to give an idea of the novelty of Dombois' research project.
