Smith is an English Lit major turned systems engineer turned kinetic sculptor (www.space-machines.com); the holder of two patents in the field of electromechanical display systems; the author of Aesthetic Wilderness: A Brief Personal History of the Meeting Between Art and the Machine, 1844-2005; and an associate of Joseph Nechvatal and Taney Roniger in the development of her new on-line journal, www.concatenationsforum.org.  He lives with his wife Dianna in New Orleans.
