Maria Paschalidou is a visual artist,/photographe/researcher and Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly, Department of Culture, Creative Media and Industries; School of Humanities and Social Sciences.. Her artwork focuses on expanded uses of photography, video as post-production and the performativity of lens-based media using participatory practices and installations. Developing in visual statements, her work explores relationships between politics and aesthetics. Her research interests include initiatives for collaborative projects and participative acts in art as well as activities that challenge dichotomies such as artist and audience, image and language and theory-praxis. She often engages curatorial activities in her practices to respond to contemporary socio-political issues and adopts interdisciplinary approaches involving a wide range of theoreticians and art practitioners in constructive art events.

 

She holds a Ph.D. in Lens-based Media (De Montfort University, UK) and an MFA in Photography (Columbia College Chicago, USA). She also studied Economics (BA, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki) and currently she is a Fellow of the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) for the completion of her postdoctoral research which is being developed in collaboration with the Department of Social Anthropology (Panteion University, Athens).

 

Her artwork has been presented in Europe, USA, Canada, Russia, Australia and Asia and has also been published in exhibition catalogues and international book editions. She has also been a visiting lecturer for various academic programs in Greece and abroad.
