About this exposition

This study examines how Finnish upper secondary school music education could benefit from approaches to teaching creative music making that values difference, diversity, self-expression, and non-judgemental approaches. It consists of two case studies which both follow values presented above: Creative process (1) and creative music making in the context of Finnish music education (2). In case study 1, music is created collaboratively by exploring diverse creative music making methods and analysing factors that are important to the process. In case study 2, I examine creative music making in the context of Finnish music education. I held two sessions in Finnish upper secondary school song-writing course, where I applied methods learned in my creative process to teaching context. I argue in this research, that pedagogical methods which create unequal power dynamics should be deconstructed from our education system. I suggest that the way to get closer to this goal, is by celebrating difference and diversity, creating safe spaces and non-judgemental environments and adding creative music making contents to the lessons so that the students learn their creative skills through self-expression.
