About this exposition

"well told stories" places the fountain at the center of an artistic and narrative exploration. Drawing on historical events and stories that have unfolded at fountains in Dresden and Saxony since the 16th century, the project generates sculptural works that reinterpret these occurrences and translate them into a contemporary formal language. The double meaning of the title refers both to the fountain (well) as a site of origin, encounter, and memory, and to the act of telling a compelling story (well told). This artistic inquiry approaches the fountain not merely as an architectural artifact, but as a cultural, political, and mythological symbol. From the pilgrimage chapel once associated with the Queck Fountain, to the mining feat of the basalt well in Stolpen, to Friedrich Kracht’s concrete fountains at Dresden’s Neustädter Markt, a multifaceted panorama of meanings emerges: sites of faith, tragedy, representation, and everyday life. Situated at the intersection of historical research, literary and mythological references, and contemporary sculpture, the project opens a poetic space of reflection on Dresden’s past and present. It highlights how fountains, as urban markers, sites of memory, and aesthetic objects, shape collective narratives and invites us to retell these stories anew.
