Jacques Vaché in Graz (last edited: 2018)

About this exposition

“Jacques Vaché in Graz” is a three-dimensional aural composition made for the MUMUTH concert hall in Graz and its 33 loudspeakers. The piece employs 31 channels. It will be performed twice on March 7, 2013, during the symposium "Mind the Gap". Before and after these two performances, it is possible to access the individual channels of the piece separately, through this webpage. Just click on a loudspeaker symbol and imagine the rest. All sounds used in the composition (except for some background noise) are produced by modernistic sculptures in Marl, Germany. For his project "Angeschlagene Moderne", Florian Dombois hit them all with a small hammer and recorded the sounds made. A shorter 2-channel version of this work, called “Jacques Vaché in Marl”, was performed in Berlin on November 4, 2010. Both versions recycle parts of the MIDI programming for a digital re-construction of a 1981 song by (my) post-punk band Svart. Titled simply “Jacques”, its lyrics addressed the alleged character flaws of J. Vaché.
