Devotion and Cunningham (last edited: 2018)

About this exposition

I assembled the notes from my notebook used during my Advanced Independent Study (AIS) in late 2017 and early 2018 as part of the New Performative Practices (NPP) MA programme at Stockholm's University of the Arts (Uniarts). The AIS was self-organized around my interest in Cunningham technique class. My research contained a physical practice stemming from a Cunningham class distributed via YouTube, as well as a theoretical approach based on reading. Chrysa Parkinson supervised and examined this course of study, and she encouraged me to think about this work as research, and I value dearly her insights and questions. This page remains a work in progress while I continue to research, work, and practice from this foundation. I return from time to time to update my thoughts, fill in missing information, and remind myself what I had been working with before. Part of this process of research has been to learn what belongs and what doesn't belong anymore. I borrow Tere O'Connor's words as a reminder of my own contemporariness even while studying a historical figure: "... I used to think of starting another movement of [Cunningham's] followers called the Hudson Movement. Its manifesto would be: Continue in any way you wish, stay awake and question your own and any other certitudes. You are contemporary because you are here and processing the world right now so don’t worry about that."
