Catarina Casais, 1997, Porto. Visual Arts teacher at middle school and high school in Portugal. Researcher in the field of Arts Education. She has a degree in Theatre – Costume Design from the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE – P. Porto), a master’s degree in Drawing from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto (FBAUP) and a master’s degree in Teaching Visual Arts from the Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto (FPCEUP). She is currently studying for a PhD in arts education at FBAUP, where she is developing the project Politics of Estrangement: Practices of Resistance and Revitalisation of Teacher Agency, funded by FCT (2024.00945.BD). She collaborates as a researcher in the groups LabEA - Research Laboratory of Art Education at i2ADS and enREDE – Rede Internacional de Investigação em Artes, Educação Artística e Arte/Educação, where she works on decolonial and anti-discriminatory issues in Art Education.

  • [in]visible_thinking about identities in textbooks (2024) author(s): Catarina Casais, Margarida Dias published in: i2ADS - Research Institute in Art, Design and Society
    The communication and workshop “Thinking about (in)visible Identities in Textbooks” of the [in]visible project [2022.05056.PTDC] took place on November 17, 2023 at the School of Communication and Arts of Eduardo Mondlane University (ECA/UEM), in Maputo (Mozambique), organised by margarida dias. The workshop, part of the 8ei_ea - INTERNATIONAL MEETING on ARTS EDUCATION (https://eiea.fba.up.pt/2023/), was attended by approximately 50 people from Mozambique, Brazil, and Portugal, and was supported by José Carlos de Paiva, Paulo Nogueira, and David Neves. After the presentation, seven working groups were formed. Six groups analysed Portuguese textbooks for Social & Environmental Studies, and one group analysed a Mozambican textbook for Portuguese-Mathematics. All the textbooks were for the 1st year and were being used in schools during the 2023/2024 school year. First, each group analysed one textbook, and then they shared their analyses and comments with all the participants.

    The exhibition Estranhamento (Strangeness) aims to share the visual art work developed by researcher Catarina Casais, associated with her doctoral project Políticas de Estranhamento: Práticas de resistência e revigoração docente (Policies of Strangeness: Practices of resistance and teaching reinvigoration). These drawings, linocuts and embroideries seek connections between her artistic practice and research work, promoting possibilities for reflection on the teaching profession in the visual arts and the teaching demonstrations that took place between 2020 and 2024. The challenge in developing these works is to think, based on the materiality of the teaching demonstrations, about possible languages through the techniques and materials used. These languages reflect a desire to think about the daily reality of visual arts teachers and the moments of protest related to their professional practice. Linocut, embroidery and drawing become ways of addressing the issue of visual arts teaching and its politicisation within the school environment, inviting everyone to visit the thinking laboratory that has been developed over the last academic year at Atelier Sem Forma.
