Laura Maes completed her Master in Music at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent in 2001 with high distinction. In 2002 she received her Masters in Marketing Management with distinction at the Vlerick Leuven Ghent Management school.

She is currently working as a researcher at the University College Ghent, Faculty of Music, where she pursues her PhD in the arts. Her dissertation subject is sound art. She gave lectures at amongst others, the University of Arts (Belgrade, Serbia), De Montfort University (Leicester, United Kingdom), Library of Congress (Washington DC, United States), University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, United States), Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Porto, Portugal), City University of New York (New York, United States) and University of Edinburgh (Edinburgh, United Kingdom).

She plays different string and electronic instruments and is active in various ensembles. Morf, a duo formed with Kirstof Lauwers, focuses on the treatment of acoustically generated sounds in real-time and the real-time generation of visuals based on audio-input. Together with Elke Soenens she forms the classical guitar duo Saffraan. She creates pop oriented music with the solo project Strona Starsza and the band Club Eau-Mer. In the past she played together with, amongst others, Roel Meelkop, Claus Van Bebber, Noise-Maker's Fifes, Pierre Berthet, Logos Foundation & Black Jackets Company & QO2 and released records on Flenix, MSBR, Cling Film, Denshi Zatsuon & C.U.E. records.

Besides her artistic activities, she worked as president of Cling Film, organizing concerts and releasing records of experimental music and curated the yearly Sonokids festival (Happy New Ears) in Kortrijk, Belgium. She is a member of the management board of the non-profit organization Kong and of comitee Mu.Zee.
