About this project

The main intention of this research is to examine and explore in depth metric modal improvisation using the ud (which is a common Greek, Turkish and Arabic instrument). The makam system will be used as a starting point. Aiming to develop extended techniques on the instrument and a high level of artistry in this kind of improvisation, a conjunction with traditions/genres in which metric improvisation is integral (e.g North Indian Classical music, Middle East music traditions), will be developed. Furthermore, this research will try to integrate techniques as well as aesthetic and stylistic elements from other styles of improvisation (e.g jazz improvisation, free/contemporary improvisation). With this doctoral research I wish to acquire a thorough insight into my playing and improvising techniques and skills, thus creating an innovative way through improvisation for a traditional instrument. Important role in this will play a method for metric improvisation developed through this process with techniques on metric improvisation and composed exercises.
