I want to investigate how I can contribute to the development of new directions in Asian musically relevant cross-over music that contains the Korean/Chinese traditional instrumentally influenced jazz guitar phrasing style and the Korean traditional musically influenced composing approach. The main focal points of the research are integrating jazz guitar language and jazz musical composing approaches with Chinese and Korean traditional instruments’ phrasing techniques and Korean traditional music’s melodic/rhythmic components.
One of the main themes of this research is, first of all, analyzing Chinese/Korean traditional instruments’ phrasing techniques and then indicates artistic methodology to reproduce those Chinese/Korean traditional instruments’ phrasing elements with guitar. Second of all, it is to apply extended jazz guitar phrasing approach that is integrated with the researched elements into improvisation, so jazz guitar’s, especially melodic, approach gets extended by Chinese/Korean traditional musicality.
Third part of my research will be to generate experimental composition for jazz ensemble. The compositions will be based on using China/Korea’s traditional monophonic melody and rhythmic components, for example, the Korean traditional rhythm system called ‘Jang-dan’.
