The Living Room

This was the experiment which started the idea of this research. This first replica was a scale model of the living room space in Pastoe Fabriek. This room is a lounge for all the students that work and study in this location and it is usually occupied and alive. There are many interesting elements that make this room unique. The room is a meeting place but also a short cut in the building’s circulation. It has more windows and doors than a common room which make the spaces connected to it look as exterior spaces. Finally, as a “public” space it is constantly changing and it is full of traces that indicate its characteristic liveness and the presence of time.

The replica in this case was an exact copy in scale 1:15 and the deceptive effect was the shifting of scales. The final product was a video consisted of scenes from the space and the model. The elements that would finally lead to the deceptive situation were the precision of the scale model, the unexpected shift of the scenes and the performer’s that worked as a reference point for the spectator.

This experiment was significant as it lead to many discoveries which were later explored further in other experiments(*).
